Mid-season review 2013

Now that we're at the halfway point of the season, I'd like to take some time to reflect on the first half. It's been pretty incredible, there's been a heated battle for the top positions and with nine races and the mid-season category left there are plenty of opportunities to win both the drivers and constructors championships. The Minichamps Car is still up for grabs as our top prize but a £30 Amazon voucher is now available for the player who scores the most points in the second half of the season.

There'll be a lot going on in the prediction league in the coming months so stay tuned. This post should cover a lot of important stuff and by popular vote we'll be having a mid-season category. I'll be releasing the full details next week so please check back. The picks will be due at the same time as Spa (22/08/2013)

Hungary Results and Championship Standings (10/19)

Firstly, we're at the half way point of the season! Well done to everyone who's got this far, it's been very competitive and the league is ebbing and flowing nicely. Kim is really closing in at the top and Rajaram and Kiszol have been charging of late so the last half of the season is going to be incredible especially with the upcoming mid-season picks.

 

I'm planning to make a few updates soon. For starters, I'm going to update the stats on the F1 Prediction League Page. As well as this, in the coming days I'll be releasing a half-year review/analysis as well as providing some more information about constructors and how satisfied they are with their current driver line-ups.

 

In the next week I'll release the categories for mid-season picks, they will be due at the same time as your Spa picks so give yourself some time to reflect on your picks before then.

 

Congratulations to Kiszol for their first win here in Hungary, it's been a story of consistency so far with four podiums and nine points finishes out of ten races so the win was well deserved. Rajaram and Ediglo also finished on the podium so well done to both. Excellent picking from a few to predict Hamilton and Raikkonen respectively as pole-sitter and winner. No one expected Hamilton to win here, even himself as he claimed it would be a 'miracle', so these two picks were very strong. 

 

Hopefully I'll see you all soon, in Spa if not before. Please feel free to comment on any of the updates in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time if you have any good ideas for categories in the mid-season picks, please comment below. We've run the league in the same way in previous years so I have a good idea however I'm always open to new suggestions.

Constructors Championship

For constructors, so not to disadvantage teams with only one driver (or to protect against someone who doesn't post), players will score points in line with race finishes. See the overall results from Britain below, Kiszol will score 25 points for his 1st place this weekend. This is different to how the drivers championship will be scored. If players are tied they will be separated by the following criteria: Race > Constructors > Qualifying > Random > The time of the pick (earlier the better).

Hungary - F1 Prediction League (Round 10)

So we're back after a long 3 week break. There are far too many of those this season so well done to everyone for making it through! Of course this is due to the absence of New Jersey from the calendar which prompted a re-schedule. The German GP was originally scheduled for last weekend. 

Will the Young Driver test have a significant influence on proceedings here? Are we set for another Lotus vs. Red Bull race here at the Hungaroring like in Germany? Obviously Lotus have previous good form here, after chasing Lewis Hamilton for most of the race last year.

In the actual prediction league, Kim and Rajaram are making further ground on the lead and positions 4-9 are separated by only 7 points. The season is definitely ebbing and flowing, which is nice to see.

Well done to Kim, Dragan and Dead Jedi for podium finishes in Germany.

Which driver will qualify the most positions above their current championship position (see http://www.formula1.com/results/driver/ for full results). In the event of a tie, the driver who is lower in the championship will be favoured. Points will be allocated based on the following:

1st - 3 points

2nd and 3rd - 2 points

4th, 5th and 6th - 1 point

Germany Results and Championship Standings (9/19)

Congratulations to Kim on their first win of the season and Dragan and Dead Jedi for their podiums.  Kim and Rajaram have started to close at the front and there were some notable poor performances (myself included).

Well done to the Lotus drivers who both finished in the top four. However just a quick mention to MetalGatherer who was extremely unlucky picking Rosberg in qualifying and Webber in the race.

The most common distribution of picks was Hamilton, Vettel/Hamilton, Red Bull, Raikkonen.

Interestingly the top five players ordered by qualifying season points chose Hamilton but only one of the eight others did. Lotus drivers were heavy favourites in the random category (6/13 picked them).

Nurburgring - F1 Prediction League (Round 9)

This is the first Nurburgring race since 2011, which was a cracking race fought between Hamilton, Webber and Alonso. There have been some issues recently with the track going into liquidation so hopefully this race is a success.

The Mercedes have been getting stronger of late but Red Bull still ultimately have the best car. Can either of these two teams capitalise or will the Lotus and Ferrari's bounce back after a disappointing performance, if not result, at Silverstone?

In the actual prediction league, positions 2-5 are separated by only one point so this is going to be very interesting weekend.

Also well done to Jasper94, Ediglo and Kiszol for podium finishes last weekend.

Random Category for Nurburgring

Which driver will have the slowest combined Q1, Q2 and Q3 time?

 

The concept is pretty simple. Drivers will be split into three categories: drivers who make Q3, drivers who only make Q2 and drivers who go out in Q1. Therefore any driver who makes Q3 will automatically beat someone who only makes Q2. Points will be allocated based on the following:

1st - 3 points

2nd and 3rd - 2 points

4th, 5th and 6th - 1 point
